Since opening its doors in 1999 as a euthanasia-free registered charity, the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter (WPRS) has saved thousands of animals from untimely demise. Many of these animals had either been relinquished by their owners, no longer able or willing to care for them, while others had been abandoned or abused by uncaring individuals. The shelter is always filled to capacity with many different types of animals including cats, dogs, birds and rabbits waiting for a new life—a second chance. Many animals waiting for a space at the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter are cared for by foster families, wonderful individuals who open their homes on a temporary basis. At any given time, the shelter has a waiting list of over 200 animals seeking respite. Every animal that arrives is provided with food, a clean, comfortable, friendly environment and veterinary care which often proves to be life-saving. The animal’s overall health is assessed, vaccinations are administered and they are spayed or neutered at the appropriate age.
The Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter volunteer program invites individuals to assist in the direct care of the animals including dog-walking, cleaning & grooming, and shelter maintenance. Others donate their time to fund-raising initiatives and shelter activities.
Paws for Thought, the official shelter publication, is a professionally designed, magazine-like newsletter dedicated to the promotion of animals awaiting adoption, public education regarding responsible and appropriate animal care, shelter initiatives and fundraising on an individual and corporate level.
Committed to working in the community, the shelter is involved in many projects including hospital and nursing home programs where animals are brought to those who are separated from or cannot have pets; and the schools program, where students are educated on the responsibilities of pet ownership and animal care. In turn, the shelter is very well respected by the community and several businesses have donated time, space, materials, personnel and funds to cover the costs associated with our various projects. As an example, the construction of some extra-large kennels was sponsored by a local business which provided both materials and labour. This has allowed for the rescue of dogs from the City of Winnipeg Animal Services that would otherwise have been euthanized.
The Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter has garnered province-wide media coverage for its role in the rescue and positive resolution of many difficult situations and serious animal abuse cases. The shelter makes every effort to disseminate its message regarding animal welfare through every avenue including print, radio, television and the Internet. Traffic to the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter website has been consistently increasing since its inception in late 2002. The Web has become a primary means of communication between the shelter and the rest of the world; an important tool for achieving our objectives.
The Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter is Manitoba’s first registered charity, non-profit, “ No-Kill” animal shelter. With assistance from participating corporate citizens, we can continue to achieve our mission.
The Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter has created a package that will not only benefit the animals, but your company as well. Included in the package is advertising for your company on our website and in our newsletter, and depending on the level of sponsorship, logo use rights, on-location advertising, an exclusive press release, and much more!
